Forum: etree Subject: A reminder about clicking the "Populate Creator in File Metadata" and "Populate Album in File Metadata" buttons during importing a show

I kinda mentioned this in the other post but now as I'm going through approving shows, I'm seeing how few users are actually using this tool to describe their shows, and it's pretty important. When you import a show, and are at the blue metadata editing page, at the way bottom after all the files are listed, you will see two buttons. One says "Populate Creator in File Metadata" and the other says "Populate Album in File Metadata".

"Populate" means 'auto-fill'. When you click the button, it will ask you to confirm the fact that you want to overwrite whatever is in the 'artist' field with the name of the band. Most likely all those boxes for each track will be empty already and so just click 'ok' and like magic, it will put the name of the band in every field it needs to go. The same thing with the "Album" which means "YYYY-MM-DD - Venue". This is essential to fill in during the initial importing, as this data is used when the deriver auto-creates the mp3 / m3u streams of your show. If you put bad data in at the begginign (or don't put any at all) the mp3s will not have that info in their id3 tags, and so thousands of future downloaders will be SOL as far as sorting / organizing their songs b/c of the lack of info.

It only takes a few minutes, and it helps future downloaders. The auto-fill for the 'artist' and 'album' are great. the auto-parser grabbs song titles from the .txt file pretty well. All you need to do is clean it up a little bit if the auto-grabber takes the wrong name by accident (usually when you leave one line blank b/c you don't know the name of the song). The only thing that the system cannot do auto-matically is put the track numbers in there. please manually type those in and viola! you'll have described each track in great detail.

Even if you don't know a single song name, you can fill out the artist, album and track number, so those at least are imprinted into the id3.

thanks for reading this little rant. I'm just trying to make sure everyone knows the tools they have to use on their shows they import, and if you don't know, now you do! :)

One says "Populate Creator in File Metadata"

Unfortunately, as far as I'm aware, this button still doesn't work upon initial import...for some reason the creator info doesn't "take" until the show is submitted the first time.

So if you tell it NOT to make derivations, import the show, then hit the back button, populate creator, THEN tell it to make derivations and re-import, it'll work.

Just a little bug which has a fairly easy workaround.
